The building of the former officers' economic society

The building of the former Caucasus Officers' Economic Society, the current "TBS" bank, located at 6, Marjanishvili St., was built by order of the Caucasus Officers' Economic Society at the beginning of the 20th century. The architect of the building is Alexander Rogoisky, originally from Poland. After Rogoisky's death, military engineers Denisenko and Savich-Richgorsky completed the construction. The building is one of the outstanding examples of modern "Art Nouveau" architecture. Facade and interior decoration were performed in the famous workshop of Italian A. Andreoletti. The building of the Economic Society of Caucasian Officers was opened on June 30, 1913 in a ceremonial situation, and despite its centuries-old history, it has reached us almost in its original form. It is a four-story building of reinforced concrete construction, with a basement, three domes, a small inner courtyard, wide door and window openings, and richly decorated facades. Like other buildings of the modern "Art Nouveau" style, its richly decorated distinctive appearance was made in the wood, stone and metal artistic processing workshops operating in Tbilisi. During its centuries-old history, the building has changed its function several times. After Sovietization, a workers' cooperative was opened here. The double-headed eagle, the symbol of the Russian Empire, placed on the central dome of the building has disappeared. Depicted in the relief medallion St George's cross was replaced by the symbol of cooperation. Since 1934, the central department store of Tbilisi was located here for a long time. Today, the head office of "TBS" Bank functions in it.
