MUSEUM OF MODERN ART TBILISI

Information in details

The building of the historical cadet corps, located at 27, Rustaveli Avenue, is the most important building of the city's historical memory, its history begins in 1871, when the primary military school was opened in the city. On July 7, 1875, the school was transformed into a military gymnasium, where 200 students were already studying. In 1882, the cadet corps was formed on the basis of the mentioned gymnasium. The school was named after Mikhail Romanov, the eangest son of the crown prince of the Caucasus, Emperor Nicholas I, who had already passed away. Representatives of different social strata and nationalities were admitted to the school. However, the children of officers' families prevailed, for whom military life, honor, and duty should have been familiar.
The staff position of the corps was allocated for 262 men, the total funding of which amounted to 32,850 rubles. Additionally, the allocated cost included the amount of priests of different denominations. Due to the irregular terrain, the building has two floors on the west side and three floors on the east facade. The original appearance of the facade composition is characterized by a simple pseudo-classical solution and a scarce ornament. Facade division implies the classical intersection of horizontal and vertical axes: the building plays an important role in Tbilisi's 19th-century architecture due to its architectural simplicity and monumentality.
