BALLET STATE THEATRE

Information in details

The Tbilisi Opera and Ballet Theater, located at 25, Rustaveli Avenue, was built in 1880-1896 according to the project of Victor Schreter, a St. Petersburg architect of German origin. Richard Wagner's famous theater in Beirut was taken as a prototype for the theater building plan. The idea of building a new theater was born immediately after the burning of the old theater (1874). The Moorish style of facades is made up of dark and light-colored horizontal stripes dividing the plane of the wall, musharabi windows, pointed and pointed arches, thin columns with broad capitals, decorative turrets decorated with stalactites, carpet-like ornaments and arches. Moorish style can be found in the interior of the building as well. The building is one of the outstanding examples of Tbilisi architecture of the 19th century.
